Re[3]: Convergence problems on AV-48WP30

Eric - 12th Sep 2005 12:38

The DCU or Digital Convergence Module MD001 is JVC Part # QAL0382-002 which is showing as NLA but has been replaced by QAL0382-004.

Is this the silver box on the board? I replaced the STKs and the resistors and now can adjust the convergence, but there is a wave in the red convergence along the top of the screen that is particularly bad at the top right corner. Also, the bottom lines of the grid don't exactly line up either. Do I need to replace this part too?

The "silver box" is the DCU or Digital Convergence Unit. It stores your convergence settings and sends them to the Convergence Out IC's when the set is powered on. It is also quite costly so before I'd replace it I think I'd recheck the STK's and the resistors. The tolerance of the resistors is very important. They must be within 5% of the value listed. Also, sorry to say but there are a lot of bogus STK's out there. Be sure to purchase them from a well known distributor.

Jamie Forgot to mention, did you try the Tech Adjust Method, rather than the Customer Adjust Method?

I did do the tech adjust method. I was able to adjust the convergence, but there is still some fairly severe distortion of the red convergence in the upper right corner (most severe example) and other areas of the TV (much less severe.) I had my uncle, who's an electrical engineer who started out as a tv repairman, look at it. We went through all the convergence menus (customer and tech) and he manually adjusted the red gun. At the end he switched the feeds on the red and green circuits. The Green then exhibited the same distortion the red had shown. I have pics posted if that is helpful. h t t p://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/preacherzson/redgreenswitched2.jpg h t t p://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/preacherzson/redgreenswitched21.jpg h t t p://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/preacherzson/ConvergenceMenu.jpg h t t p://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa49/preacherzson/Convergencecorner.jpg Essentially, I'm willing to spend a couple hundred dollars to get a new board if I need it. I just want to justify the purchase and be fairly positive that I will be fixing the problem before I lay out the money.
