JPY - 1st Feb 2006 19:06 I have been plagued with this also. My six year old $1000.00 Sony started acting up this summer and I had in the shop twice, no easy task to say the least. This time I went out shopping for a new TV since it was getting near impossible to get this thing to stay on. My problem was that it would come on and in about 30 to 90 seconds it would go black (audio stays on) I tried to buy a Toshiba yesterday (best ratings but can't compare to Sony in picture quality. none of them did in a side by side comparison, but I didn’t want to buy another Sony) I tried to buy one at Best Buy. I say tried to buy but because of the Super Bowl (Go Steelers) they could not deliver it till next week. After searching from store to store I finally found the Toshiba at Sears and they were $45.00 cheaper and could deliver it this week, but when we wrote the order up they were back ordered...Arrruugghhh! Well the good Lord was watching over me and my $600.00. I got home and got on the phone again, calling TV repair shops and finally got a fix! Here goes... Sony has a default override that disables the video whenever something is not 100%, that’s why the video shuts down; acting like the Picture tube is bad. I was told to look for the G2 adjustment and turn it. He said it was a black plastic screw adjustment located on the picture tube yoke or on the high voltage?? That can be found by following the big red lead that goes from the Tube, to it. I found it on mine and there are 2 screws, the top one (if you look closely) says focus the other one (the one you want) says screen. As the set was on (audio fine as usual but no video) I just turned that stupid screw a hair clockwise and waa laa Picture on! I played with it to see what it does and if I turned it full counterclockwise the screen went black, as I slowly nudged it clockwise I got a line at the top off the screen, then a good picture, then all the way up, a sort of bluish picture with faint lines. I backed off the screw and turned it to where the picture came on and then just a hair to keep it on, but not so far to get the lines and left it there. Another thing this wonderful TV tech told me was .Sony has a chip that automatically sets the red, blue, and green every single time the set is turned on. I'm glad I remembered that because there was lower right green cast, and an upper right blue cast after messing with this screw. I shut the set off and turned it back on and that was corrected : ) I turned the set on this morning and it was perfect and stayed on unlike the last two weeks of banging, plugging and unplugging, and shutting off and on numerous times to get it to stay on for the night. It seems that all my set needed was that tiny turn of that screw that fixed my set and saved me from spending $600.00 yesterday and throwing my perfectly good Sony TV in the dumpster....Yes, Praise You Jesus!

I, too, have a Sony that keeps shutting down. I really appreciate your detailed post. I have one question---how do you get that back off the TV? I tried everything. but it won't budge. I hope you respond quickly as the sale on the tv I have been thinking of purchasing runs until this weekend. Thanks.

Ward - 19th Mar 2006 4:54 It works! JPY knows his stuff. As a last ditch effort, I went to the net to find an answer regarding my Sony Trinitron and its blinking display. I found this forum and tried JPY's answer. It worked!! I shopped around for a new tele this afternoon and now it looks as if I can keep my money.....THANKS

Daniel Handeen - 10th Jun 2006 22:58 Yay!! I just fixed my behemoth KV-32TW77. The picture has been flashing intermittently for about 6 months. MADDENING! So Ted, after a working up the courage to just start turning screws (last ditch effort) and risk breaking the thing even worse or perhaps death, the screen screw is a black plastic Philips-head screw located in a little hole, recessed in from the circuit board on the back of the picture tube (not down by the "focus" adjustment). It says "screen" in a little box right above it. I turned it back and forth until I found the right spot. Incredibly easy. Now we'll see how long that it lasts... Good luck with yours!!

Dan - 18th Dec 2006 5:07 I have a KV-32XBR, the "screen" adjustment was not next to the "focus" screw. It was on the backmost panel behind the tube (about 3x3 inches). Looking at the TV from behind, the screw was on the bottom left of the panel, label "G2". I turned slightly to the right, and blinking stopped. Hope it stays that way.

I HAVE A 35INCH MODEL AND THE FOCUS SCREW WAS NEAR THE BOTTOM OF THE RED CABLE. I USED IT TO SHARPEN AND FOCUS THE PICTURE. MY SCREEN WAS BLINKING CONSTANTLY AND I ADJUSTED THE SCREEN SCREW LOCATED BEHIND ONE OF THE CIRCUIT BOARDS. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO CALL THE CIRCUIT BOARD, BUT IT IS AT THE VERY BACK OF THE TV WHERE CONNECTED TO THE TUBE. TV IS WORKING WELL SO FAR, YOU HAVE TO TWEEK THE SCREEN SCREW EVER SO SLIGHTLY TO GET IT RIGHT. THANKS FOR THE GREAT ADVICE. I DO NOT NEED TO BY A TV; AT LEAST RIGHT AWAY.

PT - 29th Jun 2008 0:06 Thanks so much for the post. My 1996 Sony just started acting up. I've been dreading messing with it b/c it weighs at least 2000lbs. I was starting to think I'd have to hire someone to come out and work on it. However, your fix is currently working like a charm. The Internet is awesome.

I own a KV-36FV15 Sony Trinitron, bought in 2000 for 1,700 $'s,
Recently it started blinking black, off and on at the start up for about 3 to 4 minutes but the sound is intact. Then it seems to warm up and stop blinking black screen, only occasionally later. But everytime I turn it off and then back on, it starts the cycle over again.
One of your emailers on this problem gave interesting instructions about adjusting a screen screw attached at the end of the red feed on the tube yoke or high voltage. I shall try this and get back to you sometime. Thank you for the tip.
Blessings

DJ - 29th Sep 2008 2:29 It worked for me too! Thank you. I was ready to throw out my tv. My wonderful friend took the back off my tv and we easily found the screw. Turned it a bit and now it works great! Later my daughter noticed a green tinge in the corner. We turned the tv off and back on and the green tinge was gone. Thank you for the great tips

jth - 5th Oct 2008 17:59 Thanks for the fix!! I had this happen a year ago on my 10 year old 32" Sony. Brought it to the shop for repair. Repairman said he just had to realign screen circuit and charged me $30. Its happening again and this time I will save the $30 and the agravation of hauling this 100 pound boat anchor to repairshop. Thanks!!!
