I had the exact same problem. Mine was apparently caused when I dropped it into sand at the beach, and blew on the lens to clean it. Apparently I was too close to the lens, and blew too hard, my breath going IN the lens assembly, and forcing something out of whack.
I tried your method, and VOILA! The camera was fine.... Until I turned it off. Since then, it has gone back to error 61:00, and now it makes a buzzing noise while 'Accessing'. No amount of banging will return it to working condition.
Oh well. I had assumed it was dead as a doornail already, anyway.
P.S. What's up with Sony's 20 different digital camera/camcorder batteries, and new custom A/V/USB ports on every new camera? I got a W100 to replace the T1, and I'm now on my fourth Sony battery type, and, of course, the data plug isn't the same as the T1.
