- C:13:01 Disk Error on Sony Mavica FD-71 Possible Solutions
Deb - 9th Aug 2003 1:51 I received the Disk Error message on my Sony Mavica FD-71 digital camera tonight, so I searched the web to find some solutions. I found a few suggestions, so I took the camera apart but didn't take the actual disk drive apart. By the way, I had tried six different floppy disks in the camera--that all worked fine in my computer disk drive. I never took the time to reformat any of them using my computer.
I think one of the metal disk shutters (near the opening of the disk drive on the camera) was bent a little, so I straightened both of them. You can see the metal shutters--one on each side--after you push the black plastic door open with a small screwdriver or something. I used a small screwdriver and/or tweezers to straighten the metal shutters.
I was still getting a disk error message after doing this and after shining a flashlight inside the drive to see if there was anything else bent or some obstruction inside.
Then I decided to format (on my computer) one of the six disks I had tried in the camera (all said disk error when I tried them.) After I formatted the floppy disk, the camera worked fine. Then I inserted each of the other five disks into the camera, and the camera still worked fine, with no disk error messages.
Since I got some of my ideas from various places on the web, I thought I would post my experience with this, in case it might help others.

Liz - 6th Sep 2003 1:12 I have a Sony Mavica FD-85 and used it today and when my disk was full I changed it and it gave a clinking noise and then I got the C:13:01 FORMAT ERROR.
I did talk to a sony dealer and they said they never heard of this problem with a disk that had been formatted in the camera. It sounds like it should be a E: problem which requires service. Does anyone know how to fix this on their own? I would welcome any advice as I don't want to take it in for service as this would be a great difficultly for me.
- Re: Re: C:13:01 Disk Error on Sony Mavica FD-71 Possible Solutions Deb - 6th Sep 2003 3:21
Check out the message I posted a couple of months ago to see how I fixed this problem. The link is below.
http://www.pechorin.com/m/2003/08/09/C1301_Disk_Error_on_Sony_Mavica_FD71_Possible_Solutions-203215.html
Be sure to reformat one of your floppy disks (using your computer and floppy drive,) after you adjust the little metal tabs that are just inside the floppy disk opening on the camera--to make sure they are straight and not bent. If one of the tabs is bent a little, it can cause this error message on the camera. But my camera didn't start working again until after I reformatted a floppy disk on my computer and inserted it into the camera. Then the other floppy disks worked fine after that.
Hope this helps.

Sharon - 12th Feb 2004 12:59 Hi,
I have the same problem, according to the manual if it is now a disk that was not formatted correctly, then it states the battery level of the Floppy Disk Adaptor for Memory Stick is low. But nowhere in book does it show where this other battery is? Or if we can fix on our own.

Bob - 27th Jan 2005 1:07 I got this same error. I looked inside the slot and everyhting seems fine. The tabs on both sides looked fine. I've tried newly-reformatted disks as well as disks that had pix previously taken/saved on this camera. I still can't get rid of the error message.

hugo - 22nd Aug 2006 23:37 Hey, I have tried so many different approaches as to how to solve this error. I have a DSC-F707. I have 3 - 128mb memory sticks and 1 - 64mb memory stick, all Sony and all the sudden non of them were reading it would pop up the same error. I tried the ERASER, I tried messing with the little prongs inside the camara that touch the memory sticks, I tried inserting each memory stick rapidly for more than 10 times and nothing ever worked. My last resort was a post on page 4 at the bottom about someone that bangged the camara a bit out of frustration and fixed it. BANG THE CRAP OUT OF YOUR CAMARA!, in everywhich angle. The first 5 blows didnt do it so I tried different areas to bang the camara and after like 10 times hitting it medium and softly with my palm it finally started reading ALL the memory sticks. I formatted them quickly just incase, but I dont think that that was the problem with my camara. USE THIS ALTERNATIVE AS YOUR LAST IF YOU DONT WANT TO PAY MONEY. I strongly recommend banging your camara to an extent that you dont break it if all else fails.

Jim Kloss - 18th Oct 2003 1:53 I had the same Mavica 1301 disk error. Did everything suggested above. No luck. Took the camera apart - still no luck. Finally, I took a little screwdriver and stuck it inside the diskette opening and ROTATED THE LITTLE ARM THAT SPINS THE DISKETTE. That did it! You can see the plate rotate as you move the arm ... just make sure you move it around. I don't know if the rotating plate was stuck or what, but the camera worked fine after that. Good luck!

bradley bolt - 6th Nov 2003 23:24 I had the same error on one of our city cameras, we bought 55 of them about 2 years ago, this is the first one that gave an error. these are fd200's. I tried the PC format, changing disks, etc.. no luck. Then I just bent those two tabs about a millimeter down and whalla, camera works again. The tabs appear to be the guides that allow the disk to come in. I just used a small screwdriver and just bent them in a little closer, not much. The error is gone. Can't believe bending the tabs did it but it did. Thanks so much for your help and advice.

Hi,
I have a sony mavica 85. I have been getting
the same formatting error code. I have tried
everything listed above I'm still having trouble
The 2 tabs that on each side of the disks opening
are bent but it looks to me like thats the way
it is suppose to be made???? I tried to straighten
them out but they don't bend.

For anyone needing the instructions; it\'s really quite simple to format a floppy! Put the floppy in your drive. Then follow these instructions...
Go to your Desktop.
Double Click on "My Computer".
Right Click on the "3-1/2 Floppy (A)".
Click on "Format".
Click on "Start".
When it\'s finished (it takes only a few seconds) Click on "Close". >>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Be VERY careful to be certain you click on Drive (A) and NOT Drive (C) otherwise you will format your entire hard drive. Hope this helps!

Paul - 5th Dec 2003 20:51 Looks like it must be a disk alignment problem. On mine, I found a little sticker that had fallen off a disk and was stuck in the very back of the drive. Took some patience to remove it, but once gone (and with a computer reformatted disk) the problem was solved. Look carefully for any foreign matter.
Thanks!

I've got a Sony P5, which has bombed out with that message. Timing not so good as last night went to a really nice ball, and all the pictures and MPEG videos were on the same Memory stick.
I've not got Easy CD 6. I've got Nero6.
Any idea what the application actually does, and if any other app may also do the same? Love to know a way to recover.....

I have a sony mvc-fd73 and tried everything, dropping, formatting, bending the tabs. and then went back to formatting and did the quick format and it worked.[was on the verge of trowing it against the wall] The camera was only used 2 times, was a gift to someone I know. I did the longer formatting and it did not work. But doing the quick one did. Hope this helps someone.

I use an FD71 and 83 regularly and started getting this problem a couple of months ago, thought it was the camera but eventually tracked it down to a batch of disks, 7/10 in the box didn't work or appeared to work and then failed to have any images when viewed on the PC.
changing to a different make of FD cured the problem, after that even the original (faulty) disks worked if formatted in the camera.
It seems that if a disk with a duff format is used the camera somehow remembers this and gets a bit confused !!

Hi,I got given an FD71 cos it didnt work. I tried everything everyone said and no success HOWEVER when i took the camera apart including the disk drive i found that one of the read/write heads had become dislodgedf and had been forced down behind the pivot for the moving read/write head arm. I carefully dragged the little head back up and re-glued it in place making sure the ribbon cable was pulled tight and was sat in its little trough which travels up the moving arm. The head is mounted on a little metal plate which the cable runs off the back. When levering the arm open be careful not to let it slip cos it spring loaded when it closes it could crack the head as they are very delicate so be careful! I put the camera back together and i still got the error but the i could actually see the shooting image on the screen as apposed to before where it was just black. I took it apart except the drive with both the batteries out and left it on my desk for a week cos i was annoyed i couldnt get it to work. I just put it together and it works! woo hoo. It still gets the odd error when viewing the images on the camera but hell at least it works! be careful when removing the long black plastic drive door because somewhere there is a tiny spring which holds it shut and if you loose this then the door will not put the required pressure on the diskette and the drive will not believe it is there. The door pushes the disk down onto little sensors which tell the camera the disk is present and wether it is write protected. I had to wrap a rubber band around the back of the door and the end of the drive to pull the door shut! hope this helps. I also tried all the formatting stuff.

Soli Deo Gloria - 14th Apr 2006 8:23 I think I found out how to utilize the Sandisk Magicgate 256mb memory stick on Sony Digital Camera. Just did it successfully! I have a DSC-P73 Sony Cyber-shot.
First, I insert the Sandisk stick into the camera. Of course, I get C:13:01 memory error.
Then I plug my USB cable from my camera to my computer.
After that, I go to "My Computer" to find the drive that my camera is connected.
Then, I right click the drive and select format. I have Window XP home edition. I click the box where it says "quick format" and click "OK"
Finally, Whalla! There is connection! No more C:13:01 error!
Please let me know if this works for you.

Joyce - 26th Aug 2006 23:50 I have a different problem that I cannot find a solution too. I sell on Ebay and was making my pictures for my listings. I used new floppy disc's and took photos on three of the floppy disc last night. The first disc I put in my Sony Mavica I used the first four for personal pictures of my Grandchildren then proceeded to photograph my items for Ebay on the same disc. I decided to email the photos that I had taken of my grandchildren to my Daughter, they were perfect. Today I got ready to use this disc to list my ebay items and when I put it on , I got the message "disc is not formatted". I knew it was formatted because I had already taken some pictures and emailed them . I then put the disc in my camera, and it said Disc. error 13.01. I have no idea why I am gettting that message nor why I am getting the disc has not been formatted. No one has touched this disc. and I am at a loss as to what happened to it to cause the error message and the format message. The other two discs I used are fine and I did not get any kind of error message except on this one disc. Does anyone know why this would happen and can I find a way to restore the pictures I made for Ebay listing. I had taken 38 pictures and now I suppose I have lost them all. Thanks.

Hi Deb...
Still got the camera and using...still working? I've have one I got for little or nothing. Seems to be in great shape w/manual and all accessories. Works great for my needs... But now disk error seems to be almost constant. Floppy's work on PC...yes, I even bought an external for my machine just for this camera. Worked for a week or two, light use, and now don't seem to be able to get past disk error... I tried to bend the tabs a bit, but so far nothing. Could it just be dirty?
Any further advice would be appreciated.
Hello from MN...
Floppy disks haven't changed, have they? These seem like standard 3M 1.44's to me.
Thanks in advance!

Daniel - 13th Aug 2008 23:39 I have a Sony Cyber Shot, and got the c:13:01 error message as well. My memory stick worked fine when I put it into my computer, but the camera kept telling me to insert the memory stick whenever I tried to use it. After looking through the messages on this board, I planned to format the memory stick as a poster said that would eliminate the error. Prior to fomatting, I browsed through the pics on the memory stick to ensure I had them all copied to the computer, and saw one that was somehow corrupted. I erased that picture, and did not format the memory stick, and now the error is gone. Hopefully this may help someone else having a similar problem.

Did you manage to download at least some of the pictures? I did, and noticed that the pictures were cut off a little on one side and on the opposite they were showing a little sliver of another picture. Perhaps the separation between the pictures is not working well.
Let me know if you find a solution.

Great! I don't understand why the camera needs one of the floppy disks to be reformatted to work again, but it was such a relief after spending several hours trying to figure out the problem that night. And one of the suggestions to fix this problem that I kept reading on the web was to reformat a floppy disk first. I ignored that advice for about four hours, because I knew all of my floppy disks were working fine. Glad your camera works again!

I just cleaned the inside with a KleenSwab stick and it came with small pieces of dust and debri, it has worked fine since. Maybe the electronic eye was dirty not sure, maybe I was lucky.

I use my Sony FDMavica at school daily, taking photos of my kindergarten students for a variety of educational purposes. After 2 years of excellent performance, I charged my battery one night and the next morning I got a blinking C:13:01 format error message! I am going to try formatting one of the floppy disks and try it again. The message from Deb was very encouraging! Thank you so much!

I have had the same problem with a LEXAR MEDIA Memory Stick and because I couldn't re format it on the camera (Sony Cybershot DSC-P10), I have contated LEXAR and they have REPLACED it!!! So if you have any problem with your memory stick, I highly recommend that you call the company you have bought it from and they'll take care of you!! Mine was a 256MB memory stick and it was a lot of money to throw it out...

Jelte Bos - 8th Dec 2003 20:55 I have a brand new Sony P72 cybershot camera with a Sandisk 128 MB memory stick. After many succesfull photos I took some photographs today. The have all gone as it seems because of a the C:13:01 format error. Who can help me out? How can I retrieve my pictures? Is it the camera or is it the memory stick which causes this problem?
Greetings, Jelte Bos Holland

Yes you can.
You must read the memory stick from a memory stick drive pen or another memory stick reader. The problem in my case it's that I can't delete a folder that my camera make it in the memory stick. The folder is the one who store the mail format pics.

pattie - 1st Oct 2003 2:12 Befor you reformat, try Photo Rescue, I knew i had to reformat the disk (a memory stick in my case) but i had some great photos on it, so i tried this. Its a little $29.00 program that you can download. The great thing is, you can try the demo for free to see if your photos are recoverable, lickily mine were, so I paid the $29, and recovered my photos first. I occasionally get this message on my dsc-71 but usually i reformat the disk and i am fine. but now i can save the photos first. its at http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/download_pc.htm, and i believe it will work with any photo files...best of luck

Don Agnew - 1st Oct 2003 20:46 PhotoRescue really saved the day. When I got home, I pulled up the second stick and got: C:13:001 error. I was horrified because we had just come back from vacation which included some pictures of my wife's uncle. He had been in bad health and died a week later after we got home. I had to try something as these shots were some of the last made of her uncle. Thanks PhotoRescue. Don Agnew
- Re[2]: SONY C:13:01 ERROR
diron - 23rd Feb 2005 9:46 PhotoRescue really is amazing..
I thought I would be forced to format the memory stick.
I was getting the C:13:01 error with my memory stick on my DSC-P92 and my computer wasn't even recognizing the file through my usb..
I downloaded other data recovery programs but it still couldn't read the file, then I saw this on PhotoRescues site..."PhotoRescue even deals with cases where the media is NOT visible as a drive letter anymore. We get at the pictures other recovery software does not even see. Our unique unfragmenting technology rebuilds cherished memories that would otherwise have been lost forever."
Downloaded it, and there were my photos, out of 50 photos I tooked all weekend, I was able to sucessfully view 48 of them, not bad..
- Re[3]: SONY C:13:01 ERROR
diron - 23rd Feb 2005 9:48 I had tried my memory stick on my friends same model cybershot, and on his memory stick reader, with the same result..
everyone said "format" but I knew there was hope
Don't give up, you can save thoes pics if you love them that much :)

Andy - 25th Sep 2004 13:12 FD92- I had some problems with disc errors/protetc. I find doing a full-format on the PC, then inserting the disc into the camera before turning it on usually does the trick. If that doesn\'t work try standing on your head and chant "Ohm" whilst open and closing your legs. Then throw the camera in the nearest river. These cameras are seriously crap.

Kelly - 20th Sep 2005 4:48 I have a FD73 and use it all time and didn't have a problem with it until a couple of months where my pictures looked like crap no matter what I did. Just last week I started getting a message "no disk or disk error" and now getting error message 13:01 like everyone else on this site. I bought new disks and same message, I formatted them in camera, still nothing. I formatted in PC and still no change. I am a photoghapher for a local fire dept and I love this camera cause I can zoom in and stay out of everyone's way. I agree there should be a recall on these cameras. Also when i opened the disks in the PC i would notice .411 files on the disk. I was told those files weren't important. So if anyone has a cheap solution and not be greedy about what they please help us by not keeping it to yourself.
