I'm basically nobody, just had a non-functioning Sony DSC-S40 and couldn't get any satisfactory assistance from Sony.

I discovered this fix after looking at the info from Eric and thinking about what might be going on inside the camera.

I posted the fix hoping to save folks some money. I didn't have a spare $111.00 for the Sony repair service fee.
