Quick update:
I fixed the camera myself as follows:
1. Hold camera firmly in left hand
2. Smartly rap front of camera with knuckles of right hand on the "Cyber-shot" logo.
It worked, now the LCD is working again for free.
Guess I don't need to pay Sony $111.00 for repair service.

Thanks for reporting back on the message board re your success using the quick fix.
I believe that Sony is a fine company and that they usually make quality products...However, this issue is known to them...poor training on their Customer Service side.....
Telling people with a defective DSC-S40 camera to spend $111.00 for repair is ridiculous when they can fix it themselves using my quick fix.

Thanks a lot - when I phone to service, thy told me the "expertise" will cost 10 dollars, so repair will cost 60 $ +part's cost. I safe them due to your advice!

With regards to my Sony DSC-S40 white/blank LCD screen "Quick Fix":
Well, believe it or not, I don't advocate anyone physically abusing their digital camera working or not. One should use restraint when using the "Quick Fix". A smart rap from ones knuckles will do the trick. One responder recently reported using a single finger on the Cybershot logo and it fixed it. No, he didn't tell us which finger....:-)
There is some sort of physical internal defect in the Sony DSC-S40 that unexpectedly crops up. My personal favorite Sony Customer Service horror story is the original post I found when I Gooled for the problem with my own camera. A fellow posted that right out of the box his screen was blank. It took Sony months to replace an obviously defective camera according to him. Funny thing is, that the Sony Service Rep I spoke with acknowledged that Sony is aware of this issue!
I certainly don't know what causes this phenomena to suddenly cause the LCD to white/blank out, I only know my "Quick Fix" works! And you can't beat the price.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for posting this!
My LCD starting going wonky last October so I initiated the Sony repair process because I was still in warranty at the time. Then of course the camera started working and I didn't want to send it in that way because I knew they would tell me there was nothing wrong with it, and I'd have been without my camera for weeks.
It worked fine for a couple weeks then started giving me trouble again. I noticed that a good smack with my hand solved the problem, so I used that fix for a while. I tried to use my camera yesterday and the screen was totally white and my "known fix" didn't work.
I got online with Sony support and they were worthless. LOL. They told me to reset the camera. I said "how?". They said "Turn it on and go into the menu..." I had to remind them that since I was complaining about the LCD being dead, looking at the menu was going to be pretty hard.
Ugh. I wrote them to see if they'd honor my original repair request from when it was in warranty and I'll see what they have to say. In the meantime I continued searching for a fix and found this, and of course, IT WORKED!! Thanks so much!

You are certainly Welcome! Yes, I'm amazed that Sony has not done something more effective for those of us with the white/blank LCD screen on the Sony DSC-S40 digital camera.
All they have to do is Google it like everyone else has!
The "Qucik Fix" I discovered has to be applied to the right spot....the Cybershot logo on the front.
Now that it's fixed, take some more pics!

This is exactly the reason I'm giving away my Quick Fix for free. No one should have to pay for getting a defective piece of equipment fixed.

Gift from Hubby...only had 1yr + 4mon...screen was going bizzard with lines and void of colors..yet pictures turned out. Yesterday screen went totally white. NOW IT WORKS! WAY COOL! THANK YOU ...THANK YOU...AND I DO THANK THE LORD TOO that I didn't have to send it to SONY! GOD BLESS! Hello oh good people. Its nice seeing people proviode help out of kindness. I was looking on the web to see if anyone else has had the sony white screen problem and long behold 100s of ppl are having the same problem. I see lotsa people know how to fix it. Could someone please tell me how to get the LCD back in working condition? The screen tapping didnt work for me. The screen is on when I turn the camnera on but it lasts for only 2 secs and goes white. i REALLY appreciate all your help and respect your time.

My DSC S40 got the `white screen` last year while in Venice, that time it came back on again after downloading the pictures. This week it happened again but I couldn't sort it out so I was delighted to come across this remedy which worked instantly and has saved me the cost of a new camera. Apart from this fault this is a first class basic camera.

I don't know how much 'voodoo' was involved, but my discovery of the 'Quick Fix' was more like "necessity is the Mother of invention." I too have a Sony DSC-S40 that experienced the dreaded 'white/blank LCD screen problem'.

Holy Crap! it worked for mine too, thank you very much. I thought that maybe it was from going through the screening system at the airport because it seems like that's when it happened. I knew it was only a display problem because I took some snap shots and then checked the mem stick on the comp, and it was taking images but just not displaying them on my display. man thanks again.

Wow.. it really worked for me. You saved me to bring my camera to Sony the costly service place in the world. I hold the camera in left hand turned its lens towards facing me and i tapped 3 to 4 times on the cyber-shot logo and it worked.. Horrayyyyyyyy....

Hi Bob...welll what can I say but thanks for your fix....I live in Australia and was about to take it into a camera shop to get the bad news of how much it would cost to get it fixed..in fact i had already started looking for what i could replace it with....yes.. what you said about it being a defect but not coming clean is not a good company policy... anyway...glad i went on google and got your fix... thanks again...my cousins use to live in pittsburg and i remember good times visiting good old PA!

Does this work for the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T70 as well? I unfortunately do not have the camera in front of me to test. When I touch the screen it makes sounds and reacts as if nothing were wrong, however the screen is white. It works and takes pictures though.
Any assistance would be great!

Thanks so much it really did work. My daughter got rid of this camera and was going to throw it out. It layed in her closet for three years. I picked it up and came to find out what the problem was. For work purposes, I received a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S40 camera. After just a few months of dealing with the screen fading in and out with lines across the screen, I would tap it, etc. This worked each time until one day when it totally blanked out to white. I was not able to use it any longer. This was two years ago.
I always felt totally responsible and wanted to replace the camera but did not try to actually purchase another camera until this summer. I went on E-Bay and bought the same model. When it got here it had some of the same lines across the screen. I tapped it and it would come back. After a couple of uses, it eventually did the exact thing the old one did. I was so upset. So I took a chance to type in Google for a solution. To my surprise I found one. Then in total shock the solution worked!!!! Yeah!!! However, I do wonder what would be the permanent solution?

An absolute great fix, is there something permanent to do by opening up the camera. I think somewhere I read about the harness coming loose but no pics or advice on how to fix it.
Still if a rap or two fixes the problem better than trashing the camera.

This really seemed like a bogus fix for the camera. I tried it reluctantly.
Holy crap!!! It works! One knock from my knuckle on the logo.

Thanks for letting us know that it helped you as well. Yes, I would be skeptical as well except for the fact that it works. I certainly can't explain why this works, but from the many replies, it isn't just a fluke with my DSC-S40 camera. I did receive the info that James had originally posted directly from him, but didn't want to crack open the camera. This fix is much quicker and "cleaner".

Thank you for the temp fix. I was about to sell this camera on ebay, but I was worried because I had some pics on it that I needed to get off the internal memory before I sold it. As you can imagine thats impossible without a working display (the camera wouldnt allow me to cut the pics or delete from the PC).

WOW !!! BOB THANK YOU!!!! I have had the same intermittent problem with my Sony and everytime I try to demonstarate to retail store the issue, it would work fine, making me feel like an idiot. They said we can fix something that is not broken.
Recently I was not so lucky. Now that it is out of warranty it shows up and has stayed permanent. Sony and the retail store acted like they never heard of the problem, but for a handsome fee would repair the camera ( I can nw buy a new one for what they want to repair this one)
When you go onto google you see many people have had the very same issue with the very same model. Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me. We can all show sony how displeased we are with their lack of concern and that is to buy another brand next time. For the price you pay for these things they should last longer than a few months. And it is obvious that there is something coming loose a bad connector or something.
The first time it worried me as I knew it was the sign of a real problem, but I replaced the batteries and it worked fine . Now that it is out of warranty the problem showed up again and nothing seemed to work.. Looked as if I would be looking to buy a new cam HOWEVER thanks to you it WORKED!!! (still can't believe it)
I will buy a new cam but you can bet I will be looking at alternatives to Sony.. Ashame because other than this issue it is a great cam with excellent battery life. Anyway again TY! TY! TY!

Glad to hear it worked for you as well. My son was on vacation, out of the country, when it happened to him and the warranty was to expire while he was still on vacation. Although it's a nice camera when it works,we won't be buying anything Sony for a long, long time. Very poor Customer Service considering the posts regarding this issue on the internet alone. Their nonsense about putting in fresh battetries got real old, real fast.

My screen went white last week and wouldn't come on at all. One tap on the front logo, and it works. Thanks.

Hey Bob, thanks a lot!!! After getting a pre-packaged response from Sony this afternoon I decided to see if anybody else had this problem. Sure enough I stumbled across your page and had it fixed in a matter of seconds. I have forwarded this information to Sony and asked them to let me know if they think a recall is in order. Jim.

Glad to hear that the simple fix worked for all of you as well.
Since Sony advised me it would be a minimum of $111.00 for the Repair Service fee to fix our Sony DSC-S40...consider this a free gift from us to all of you.

My daughter has the white screen problem with her DSC-S40 also. I sent the "free fix" message to her to try. How long has yours been "fixed?" Where should we sent info about this camera to Sony to get a recall going?

I would like to see this in a recall, too. My camera's screen goes white quite frequently recently. I have owned it for almost two years, and it's begun to do this in the last three weeks or so.
The weird thing is...the scree starts to look a little pixel-ated and red-ish before it goes out.

This is unbelievable. We have two of these in our office and both were having the screen issues. Prior to finding this post, I smacked the first one as is usual for last ditch technical efforts, on it came. Just for amusement, I googled the issue and found this post. I applied the same technical service to the second camera, and again it began operating correctly. I guess sometimes brute force is the accepted method.
