Re[3]: JVC service or questions

It seems as though you have a JVC model HX-D7. Me too and it is doing the agonizing "protect" display. It seems to be a common problem w/ this model and I am not about to pay for JVC's faulty design. If you know what the repair shop fixed, I would be pleased to find out.

  My friend is having the same problem with the CA-HXD7. Sounds like a bad batch of these went out. From what I've found its some kind of faulty resistor. I have no idea what it would cost to have it fixed in a shop, but I can bet it isn't worth it. Poor girl paid $400 at some point for it.

    OK I own one of these that works perfectly. However I bought one at an auction that goes into Protect mode. The problem with these units is that the smart ones at JVC designed this system with 2 mono 100W STKs - nothing wrong with that - but they flopped and attached them both to the same heatsink that is not big enough to dissipate the heat fast enough - even with the fan running. The system will work fine as long as you never run it close to max power for prolonged periods. The STK IC costs over $110X2+shipping=$250+- The new unit cost $249+shipping. Is it worth fixing?       Hey Elviz thanks for the help. I am having the same problem with my stereo. I opened up my HX-D7 and found two Sanyo STK428-610s. Is this what needs replaced? Do you have any recommendations on where to get them? Also, do you have any suggestions on keeping the new ones cooler? Thanks alot, Adam

      Adam.. Yes that is one of the ICs that are prone to go down. Make sure the last three number matches the ones your replacing. Vendors tell you its the same thing, but it is not. Regarding what you can do to help with the overheating: I got some silicone heatsink compound and applied it to the heatsink before installing replacement ICs. It helps to throw in a small 12v fan that direct-cools the heatsink. I have a pair of OEM ICs home I think. I will double check and let you know. Tell me what are the numbers of the two you have. Did you determine that they are both indeed defective? You can do so by just desoldering and removing one at a time and powering up the system after you remove each. Perhaps, only one is bad. Once you remove one, power up the system and see if the stays on. If it does the remaining IC was not causing the error.
