I was about to send it off to Sony for repair, thought i'd google the problem and found your post. Worked a treat, thanks. Interesting that all this model had the same fault at the same time of year?

  My guess is poor timing, certainly nothing they could think up at Sony..or else they'd have a better fix themselves....?
