Ok, this REALLY worked for my camcorder - a Sony HDR-HC7. Thanks everyone!!!!!!!!
Had the first error C:31:22, followed the recommendations here - took out the battery, gave the camcorder a few smacks to the tape area. Put back the batt and tape, got another error C:31:23, refuse to give up, took out the batt and tape, gave it another few more hard whacks....and voila, it's working now!!!!!!!!!
