Re: Sony PD170 vs Panasonic DVX100a

Steve Rosen Posted Jan 31, 2004, in response to:papi

I own a PD150, a DSR 300 and an Aaton super 16 camera. I just bought a DVX100A. Before jumping on the DVX bandwagon, consider your actual working needs. The DVX is a great, and I mean great, video camera for controlled shooting in the 24p mode. The controls are straightforward and easy to use... But, my PD150 takes excellent video, is way better in the "AUTO" mode (which can be important shooting skating) and the fit and finish of Sony cameras in in a whole different leaque than Panasonic (I don't know what idiot in their art dept chose metalflake grey as a color for the 100A). Although the PD150 isn't as programmable, it takes terrific pictures out of the box. I have had documentaries broadcast nationally on PBS with 25% of the footage originating from that little camera. Why'd I buy a DVX? Because I shoot film, and want a video camera that gives me that "look" - or as close as possible - It's good, especially if you take time with it, but it still isn't film...

All the way PD170. Strong "horseworking" camera with better picture, it beats DVX100 almost in every aspect. You can make your tones "cinematik" while you edit. And do you REALLY need 24p? Even if you know that you can shout it only when you have a lot of light? And your optical stabilisation is not so effective? Well I checked both of them and I will go for PD170. It brings REAL rich image, it is perfect in low light it work very good in "auto" and it made for many years work.

I went to the sundance film festival set on getting a pd170 after film friends/directors suggested that is what i should start on. But I was introduced to the panasonic agdvx100a 24p while I was their . i was told by other directors that that is the camra to get. So now my dilema is do I get the dvx100a or the pd170. What is the visual difference between the two. i want the best quality. I have a sony vx2000 and love the feel and I am use to the sony look. So aesthetically i am interested in the sony. But I am interested in better quality. What are the pros and cons of each?

thanks heaps for your comments it did both : help me and confuse me too. I thought i had made up my mind opting for the dvx100a over the sony due to the reports on the first shipment of the pd150 having audio problems. I also dont mind the look of the Panasonic even though you dont (not offended by your comments on it though) I spose the major dilema i have is that i dont like standard looking video footage and love to get creative with my shooting aswell...on my xl1 i never shot on auto mode always in manual so shooting auto is not a worry although i did notice it on the dvx100 so much difference in how little work you have to do hahaha. Correct me if im wrong but my feelings are the pd150 is a reliable broadcast quality camera while the panasonic to me offers an amazing picture with the options to get that step closer to that film look. If im right i feel i would stick to my original pick of the panasonic. If you could let me know if im close that would be great. Thankz alot!!! Tristan
