Re: Cleaning my rear view projection television
Mike R. - 22nd Feb 2005 23:23
We bought a Mitsubishi 52" rear projection TV in December '04. Now, 2 months later, there are two dead spiders suspended between the screen and the outer glass, which directly impede the view of the television. Mitsubishi does not warranty the television against insect infestation, we are told.
Has anybody run across this problem with other rear projection TV's? We do not have a problem with spiders in the house, only see one around occasionally, usually in the fall when the weather turns colder. Any way to get them out, and keep them out?

Try removing the speaker grill. Often the screws and tabs for the screen frame are concealed under the grill. A piece of flannel with a MILD cleaner such as glass plus is all you need from there. DO NOT SPRAY CLEANER DIRECTLY ON SCREEN, MIRROR OR LENSES! Spray the cloth first...

Jason - 11th Mar 2005 13:14 Do NOT use glass plus or a glass cleaner - it can make plastic turn cloudy. Try isopropol (rubbing) alcohol or distilled white vinegar. make sure the cloth is clean, with no abrasive dirt in it.
Monster also sells a kit for cleaning rear projection TVs.

my god. my parents' crappy rca rear-projection 50+" hdtv has the same problem. watching the movements of the spiders inside the screen has become something of an obsession, a soap opera of sorts, esp. when we see them during baseball games (like on the pitcher's mound, so to speak). this shouldn't happen. did you find a remedy?

My Mitsubishi 52" has a back reflector that is on a hinge, so you simply remove the fixing screws and it swings inward. It gives access to the 3 lenses and you can clean the mirror and remove any pesky cobwebs too. If your projection TV is similar in design, you might want to check that out before you start trying to get at stuff from the speaker grille area (pretty dangerous in my case, exposed electronics!).
