Brand new JVC GR-D270U minDV camcorder. Charged battery, powered unit on, loaded tape and instantly got Unit in safeguard mode. E03 eject tape and re-insert. I can do this a few times and the message will clear but I start to record and within seconds, the message reappears. What cuases this and what can I do to prevent it?

Have you tried it with another tape? as the E-03 error code indicates a problem with the cassette take up spindle and is nearly always caused by a faulty cassette, if however it still does it with another "known to be good" tape, and preferably ONLY a JVC / Panasonic or Fuji tape, then as its brand new I suggest you refer the problem to wherever purchased from.

Actually, it was with Maxell tapes and I tried it with two that were new. Teh manual said JVC were preferred but not mandatory. I'll step over to the electronics store at lunch and buy a JVC brand tape. Or, if there is one that is the utmost preferred, I'll use it if you can tell me which one is least likely to cause a problem.

Well it has to be genuine JVC branded, and this is not said by person who is connected with JVC and have a certain obligation of loyalty, as I have no connection to JVC! but its a known fact in service circles that most of the drive related problems associated with JVC camcorders only manifest themselves when brands other than JVC are used, and if brands other than mentioned are avoided then the user generally experiences the minimum of trouble. That of course meaning not more than normally experienced with any other brand of camcorder, as by the very nature of the miniature tape drive mechanisms involved camcorders can at times be troublesome, however it has to be said that JVC mechanisms ARE very sensitive to less than perfectly matched tapes.
