Your suggestion worked for me. (It's 2007, three years after your posting!)
I bought a Sony DSC-W5 second-hand along with a San Disk 512 MB Memory Stick PRO. The memory stick gave the C:13:01 error right off the bat. So I have no idea what was done to it before.
But now we are back in business. Very grateful for this discussion forum.
