Alan, I have the same model AV48WP74 and I also have that thumping noise you experienced. When I power it up, I have no pic or sound just that audio thumping repetitive noise coming from the speakers. From what I've read, thats the protective circuit kicking in and out. What did you do to fix it? Thanks

    In my case, I had a bad soldering joint in the convergence board. To test it, disconnect all the connections to the convergence board, and power on the set. If the problem is in that board, it should power up, with a wavy picture with little to no convergence. If the problem is elsewhere, It will still thump. Thats about all I did.
