I have the same error on my sony camera. I took the camera apart and opened the lens compartment and could not find any problems. I basically took the whole camera apart and could not find any loose or damaged ribbon cables or wires. I removed the small motor housings that control the focus and zoom and manually adjusted the focus and zoom and set them for about 6 ft-20ft. This is all I was able to achieve. At least I can click and shoot simple shots that don't require zoom.

I have a new Panasonic PV-D4744S. It never got past it's initial setup/configuration. It displays an error 7-U (with the dash on the top line of the LCD). Any help you could provide decoding this error message would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been able to find any error code documentation and the folks at Panasonic don't answer the phone or return emails.

I just came from best buy after a drag out fight over this error code...They actually told me it was helping protect me from overwriting a tape. I missed my kid's state competetion...and this is after having it serviced twice. Needless to say, I now have a new camera....but didn't make up for missing such an important event.

Had the same error message on my TRV-720, and could not come up with a solution for weeks until I found this website:

    http://www.protechcam.com/wwwboard/messages/127.html

Now the fix you will not believe, nor did I at first, but requires you to power off the unit completely and "Smack it" a few times fairly hard.
Now you may do this at your risk, but I swear it fixed mine and all the other people listed at the above web site.
I thought it was a joke - but it works!!

    Good Luck!

I was getting ready to buy me a new Digital 8 camera but I decided to look online about this error before spending any $$$ and found this link. Slapping it around worked for me. This is too funny! Same problem - different solution: Before reinserting the tape, wind the tape's wheels inwards a quarter turn. If the tape has become tight, such as at the end of the tape when tension is increased the camera gets scared it might break the tape. Controlling your camera's transport from an application on your computer might also help it to get back to work. If it happens with every tape then its probably time for professional service or a slap!

It reminded me of a problem similar to the one I lived with my SONY MD Recorder MDS-JE510 that I bought in 1998. It wouldn't record properly unless it was unplugged for a couple of hours. It suggested that some parts of the circuits were overloaded for some reason.

I had the C:31:23 & C:31:22 error on my Sony TRV318. I turned off the camcorder, removed the battery for 60 seconds. Then I inserted the battery & put a new tape in. NOTHING HAPPENED BECAUSE SONY'S KNOWLEDGE BASE did not let me know that if I hit the camera a couple of times with the palm of my hand that that would fix the camera. I am shocked it worked kind of like that car radio I had when I was 17. Thanks foe the help guys Frank

Hi - I too stumbled on the 'hit fix' solution on the internet one day and it worked! ... for awhile.... Then the error codes started happening again ... I'd hit it again ... it eventually would work again .... for awhile ... right now it's not working. So. Do I hit it harder? What now? Anyone else experiencing this? Any other solutions presenting themselves? Perhaps bashing it with a hammer or wrench??? Strange. I was also curious how long everyone's camera's worked before the error codes began ... like is it some built in thing that happens once the warranty is no longer valid to encourage more back end business for sony via service and replacement?? Mine worked well for nearly 2 years before this began... Hoping there's a way to keep this thing working .... And if there's not, well next time I WON'T be buying a sony...

RIGHT ON!!! i'll always remember this site for this kind of great advice. My PC-9 has recorded probably about 900 skydives and been used to record archives of another 250 rock shows. i was just trying to capture some video and lo and behold, C:31:22 came up. i have another PC-9, but it's really my wife's camera, and i like to leave the older one plugged in to my studio setup. i held it up about 18" off the ground and dropped it - twice. Second time, it worked just fine!! Thanks! ajpen

It works! I got a C:31:22 error message on my 4 year old Sony DV camera about 10 minutes ago. I could not believe my luck! I can buy a new camera! YESSS! I thought I'd look online for a solution and found your suggestion. It seemed so... ludicrous... laughable even. I told my wife and she said: "Well, giving electronic equipment a sharp tap is the first thing that engineers do when they're fixing something - just in case it has a loose connection..." What the he11 thinks I... If I hit it hard enough I may still get a new camera! One power off and a sharp tap later... D@mn! It works OK now! I am cursing you for fixing my camera - Now I don't have a good excuse to buy a new one! ;-) Oh, and by the way, my wife also thanks you for saving us a few bucks! Seriously though - Thanks a million - I should get a few beers recounting this story.

    • Re[2]: FIX!!! for Self Diagnosis C:31:22 Andr - 2nd Apr 2006 8:01
I found a message here http://www.globalmediapro.com/av/messages/135625.html where they talk about the error code in terms of bad connection on the PCB. Repairing the camera by smacking it might be explained by getting a better connecting due to the G-Force. However, reading all the negative messages on the internet about Sony products explains me why the company is not doing well. They have a serious quality problem and people start to choose alternatives.

I have a Sony DCR-TRV730 (Digital 8) and the wacking worked for me. I have had this camcorder for about four years and it has worked like a charm until the dreaded C:31:23 message appeared when I tried to record my 3rd grader's school musical performance. I happened to have a CVS reusable camcorder in my camera bag, so I salvaged something of the situation. I went to the Sony site and followed their procedure which did nothing. Thanks to everyone who has shared their experiances. I have my 3rd grader's field day to tape on Friday and now I have my camcorder back in orperation!

Before anyone smashes their camcorders to bits (think of all those tiny non-serviceable pieces), try just giving the battery a sharp set of raps. Search on 'Lithium depassivation' for more technical information.

well what do you know. It is actually the contacts between the guide and the metal body inside. when the case is closed, the swith is supposed to be activated. proper misalignment will cause the circuit to break and an error occurs. So pounding might only cause the connector to be aligned again or something. Anyway, it was lucky it worked. To prevent, load tape slowly. wait untuil th tape fully stop before removing the tape. never, never drop or bang the cam on the table etc. When in the bag, careful not to jolt it. use heavily padded bag.

YES!! It really works, when I read the first post I thought it was a joke, but after reading all the posts I thought it was worth a try, gave the camera 3 good raps on my knee from the battery end, put in the tape and voila! the camera works. Thanks again.

this worked wonderfully. This is what you do 1. Slap tape side of camera (3 times is good) 2. take out tape and put back in 3. Take out battery and put back in 4. Turn on 5. if you still get it repeat steps

Add one more to the big pile of believers. Recently I was able to fix my Sony Cybershot W5 digital camera error message by slapping it around. I was slightly incredulous. But then I got the C:31:23 error on my Sony TRV27 video camera and Google led me to this site. After slapping it around real good a few times, sure enough, it sprang back to life. While part of me is glad that I have been able to fix these problems with such a simple (although barbaric) fix, I will almost certainly never buy another Sony product after being stymied by bogus error messages like these.

Sony TRV-280 videocamera. Error code 31:22. Tones. Won't record, rewind or play. Tapes of trip to Rome worthless unless I buy a new camera. I felt sad. Months passed. I'd try it from time to time. Same result. Then I found this site and I had to laugh. I mean, how many times does something like a swat work on anything? Battery removed, check. Three spanks on the tape side, check. Replace battery. Yeah,Daddy!!! It worked and I'm really pleased. Man, this made my day. Thanks.

Omg you are a savior! Same error but only with a certain tape took battery out, unplugged waited about thirty minutes and chunked it off the fifth floor. Damn thing splintered into a thousand pieces and I saved a ton of money on my car insurance. lol actually got message on one tape only. Havent yet banged it but Im willing to try. unplugged no battery in it.

I just used this on my TRV22 and it works! And it makes me think of this story: Several years ago, a friend asked me to help her with her broken camcorder, a Sony Video 8 model. It wouldn't turn on or eject, and I couldn't fix it. A few days later, she told me it "fixed" itself after she dropped it down the stairs in her house. Thanks for this great tip!

I'm a computer engineer, i thought this was total crap and would never work, but Sony keeps surprising you, I Owe you my friend, because the SONY ppl over here failed to fix it !!!! Anyone who faces the same problem, remove the battery, then tap the camera gently on the 4 sides 2 or 3 times, (with the tape inside or outside), insert the battery again, and there u go !!

I have been getting the 31:23 and 31:22 errors on 8 out of ten tapes I try to insert. I have a Sony HVR Z1U. The camera is only a year old.... What to do? I heard that it may be a mechanical issue with a small piece possibly having broke loose, or a moisture issue, we are in autumn and the studio is sub-level (basement) - I am not sure what to do. Should I turn on the de humidifier and leave the camera open overnight to 'air out'??? I have been to Egypt and back with this camera- and no probs till now What to do???!!! Help please!

Smacking the camera didnt work. I smaked it until my hand hurt. Then I tryed to take the battery of for 60 secs. It didnt work either. Then I read somewhere that you could take a hairdryer and blow in to your camera. And the error just disapeard.

Oh jesus this is hilarious. I have been taping blogs and it flashes C:31:23 ALL THE TIME. normally I take out the tape and leave it, but I tried that a few times and it didn't work. I found this forum and didn't believe it, I was very scared of breaking my camera. So, I turn it off, unplug everything, and start whacking the living S@1* out of it. I b###h slapped the area around where the tape is put in, cringe as I turn it back on, and the error is gone! Thank you!!! haha.

well well well, i've been hitting it for about 20 mins, dropping it from stupid heights and smaking it as hard as i could. Nothing what was happening was i put the tape in it read the time brought a picture up but was very slow and jumpy. So i thought it had to be a differnt type of problem even though after 3 seconds of the jumping it gave the error. So hitting lots and lots didn't work. in the end lost it thought stay calm anyway. put the tape it, pressed play and just very lightly nudged it while playing on the desk. N bobs your auncle it worked. Cheers

OMG it worked! Thanks for the tip. I guess the error is to do with a mechanical fault caused by the loading mechanism sticking. Smacking the camera clears the sticky bit, and the camera works again. Thanks again, I thought i was looking at some expensive Sony Service Centre fix.

I have a TRV82 with a C:31:22 error, un-powered it, smacked it a few times and it was a miracle. This was the fix, I too couldn’t believe it. Back in the old days I had a TV that I would smack and would work fine, who would think that high tech electronics would also work with a smack. Funny if someone smacked me I would stop working. LOL Thank you for the fix.
