Billy Bob - 21st May 2004 18:31 I own SONY F707. Finally figured out what was causing the error... loose ribbon wire. At the beginning [of the symptoms] rapid removal and insertion of the Memory Stick was sufficient, at one point that no longer helped. So I called the tech support, because my camera is off warranty, they wanted $270 for the labor, plus I have to pay for any parts they replace, plus shipping. I figured that, at best, I will get my camera back in 2 months for $350... or I can buy a new one for $500. With that mind I decided to open the camera and poke around since it was obvious to me that the problem is a loose contact. I had little fear of damaging the camera for two reasons: (1) it is broken already, (2) the optics and CCD compartment is completely isolated from the circuitry. The small ribbon wire connecting the Memory Stick bay to the main [and only] circuit board apparently came loose. I took everything apart and connected it back together. Seems to work fine. I will post detailed instructions on how to take the camera apart on my website soon. http://hbar.servepics.com/~val/text/articles/f707/

Cordelia - 22nd May 2004 23:22 I had a disk error and tried formatting, everything. Nothing worked. Can you please give me details of how you attached the ribbon. I took the back off of my FD85 and a large ribbon was disconnected.
Thank you.
- Re: Re: Re: SONY C:13:01 ERROR
huomo - 9th Sep 2004 1:40 that wide ribbon has a fitting on one end. it\'s male or female depending on which end of the ribbon it\'s on, but a similar male or female complementary fitting should be on a board next to where you found the ribbon hanging. Check to see if there is a piece attached to the fitting that seems to swing or move: that\'s a locking piece and once you insert the ribbon you lock in the connection by pressing the locking piece inward. Otherwise the fitting may be a simple press fit.
- Re[2]: SONY C:13:01 ERROR
Jim Millson - 17th Apr 2005 13:31 I bought a new Sony F717 in June of 2004 and it lasted 4 months before the first C:13:01 error. It seemed to magically fix itself a short time later and then went on me again a week ago (just as I went to take the first pictures of my kids at Niagara Falls, talk about disappointment). I went on-line and found all sorts of solutions that didn't work for me. I rubbed the card contacts, I bumped the camera, I re-formatted it and reset it and tried a different card etc etc and nothing worked. Anyway it was still on warranty so I took it in for service. The tech said he couldn't find anything about this on a Sony technical bulletin, which given the amount of reported instances on the net is completely amazing. He got rooting around inside the camera and found exactly what you did; the end of the ribbon cable connecting the card reader to the main board had popped out on one end about a millimetre. He re-inserted it and used some foam tape to hold it in place and it immediately corrected the problem. This C:13:01 error seems to be quite a problem with Sony cameras in general, maybe just a design fault with the ribbon end. Anyway I hope this helps someone a little, it made me feel better to know I didn't waste hundreds of dollars on a paperweight.

Hi I had the same problem with my f717 camera. I followed all your instructions and opened the camera. Checked the cardreader cable and re inserted it. But after fixing everything back the camera is not responding. What could be the cause. I checked several times that the cables are connected properly.
Please give your suggestions.
Thanks

The problem with FORMATING in cams like SONY CYBERSHOT DSC-P72 is that YOU CANNOT DO IT if you're having the error displayed. I tried inserting the memory stick in and out a couple of times, I tried erasing it with my pencil, I tried using programs to recover files. Nothing works. The memory stick CANNOT even be reformatted in the PC because it gives you a msg that "THERE IS NOT A DISC INSERTED" even though it is inserted in the camera.

conrad - 2nd Jun 2004 13:27 Out of the blue I got the C:13:01 error on my F707 after 2 years of use. I took the memory stick and put it in a card reader instead of using the USB on the camera. I easily recovered all but the last picture I took. Then before turning the camera on or reinserting the stick I put the camera into setup mode. Then I inserted the stick and formatted it with the camara. This worked fine. Hope this helps.

Nick - 3rd Jun 2004 14:23 Just got through reading the posts, none of the fixes worked, heres what happens when i try different things... mem stick in cam, connected to P - nothing working, eg no read and no write mem stick in cam, connect to mac - reads fine, wont write mem stick in reader connected to PC - reads fine, wont write mem stick in reader connected to mac - can read and write fine, but the card is 2Mb down on it's formatted size, PC doesn't show this - Flash chip could be dead (can only be written to so many times) formatting the card works fine, but i still get the error on the cam, using the 16Mb stick the cam came with it all works perfectly, so the cam is not at fault, i believe the problems with the mem sticks (dont know about the floppys) could purely the flash chip has reached the end of its life, flash chips can range from a few 10s or writes, to many 1000s depending on the chip used

Hi all! my Mavica MVC-CD1000 same error that everyone else had. It came on somewhat suddenly (after a ski trip) where the CD could no longer be accessed, and was kind of weird becuase if I were to boot while holding it at different angles when starting up, sometimes it worked for a little while, and sometimes it didn't. Eventually it stopped working all together. I hit on the idea that I'd just take it apart and put it back together. (maybe I'd find a snowman with his hat blown off, or something else obviously wrong.) I'd seen many references to CDR alignment problems causing it not to read the disk, so I disassembled from the middle of the camera all the way to the back, thinking maybe something was loose or bent. when I got to the CDR module, I was kind of dismayed because everything looked in order and not damaged. Before putting it back together without doing anything, I hit the message boards and the critical message caught my eye (thanks piclucia!) Stating that a Canadian shop had told him his gears were chewed up. I went back to the CDR module itself and started to disassemble the housing where the gears existed. Low and behold once I got it open, I found there was a sort of mini worm gear. which was linked to the laser housing by a tiny plastic 2-spur gear on a flexible metal arm. This spur was almost not touching the worm gear anylonger!! So, I bent it a little, here's how: recommended Steps to repeat my repair: (WARNING this is involved, it took me 2.5 hours and there were lots of screws and connectors) 1) get a piece of paper and draw a simple view of your camera, then note all the places where the screws exist. (draw a line out from your picture and then a circle or something) 2) now remove all the screws you can find on the outer housing minus the ones on the front of the lens and the eyepiece (There should be 13), and carefully lay them on the little circles you drew on the paper, so you'll know where they go later. 3) Gently pull the viewfinder module straight up, and detach the 2 ribbon connectors and molex from the main camera body. (I'd recommend making another drawing where each ribbon goes in relation to the body of the camera because there are lots of them you'll eventually have to remove.) Place the viewfinder module aside 4) Gently remove the ribbon cables and molex that are connecting the lens assembly to the main body (One of them will be attached with a little foam pad with adhesive, it's ok to pull this off for now) 3) Pull the main body backward and set the lens assembly aside. 4) Now, looking at the inside of hte main body, remove the two brass screws holding the top two circuit boards to the bottom one, as well as any ribbon cables and connectors that attach the top boards to anything below (I think there's 4 ribbon cables and one molex), and slide the top two circuit boards down away fro the notch/tongue at the top. Set the top two circuitboards aside. 5) Remove the 3 black screws on the top (two are for the hinge in the door), one black screw on the top left of the metal bracket (kind of recessed), and one black screw near the bottom right. If you did everything correctly, the whole metal bracket with attached CDR should come away from the back door assembly. Set the back door assembly aside. 6) now flip the bracket over and you'll see the CDR and laser assembly (a black plastic thing) which is attached by 3 plastic connectors and rubber grommets) Before continuing, flip it back over and remove the largest ribbon cable located under the sticker about replacing the fuse. (I didn't detach the smaller one) 7) on the CDR side, Gently pull the tabs on each plastic foot away from the center and it should lift off the metal bracket. (I left the 3rd one with the ground tab on it, but I did remove the screw that secured the ground tab.) Then flip the CDR over. 8) Near the bottom you should see an area where a small white gear is exposed, this is attached by 3 screws, remove them and the gear housing lid. 9) Once the gear train is exposed it should be a simple matter to see the worm gear (metal and long) and the little spur gear on the metal tab. 10) Gently bend the metal arm a little so the spur gear makes better contact with the worm gear. 11) Carefully reassemble everything 12) You're Done! I hope that fixed your problem! If anyone finds this helpful, just send me a note, so I know I saved someone $200+ in repair fees =) Escher

Mary Hobbs - 2nd Jan 2008 9:03 Happy New Year
My 5 year MVA CD-1000 had error 13.01 in mid June 2005.
Found your Solution detail article but until now I took it apart carefully with notes and took pics with my Sony Cybershot.
When I disconnected the ribbon cable(the one that has a little foam pad with adhesive)in the viewfinder module, the little plastic end that aids in the insertion came apart. That was in step 6 and I surrendered.
Are you still help in fixing this camera? If so, Please email me.

Rob - 4th Aug 2004 22:12 Escher,
Excellent!!!!! I got the same error and I had to hold mine at funny angles to get it to read/write.
I followed your instructions and got to the "spur gear". It was still making contact, but I bent it in more and when I re-inserted the worm gear, it was a much more snug fit.
I reassembled the camera (you weren't kidding about the time - 2 hours) and it works like new!
Thanks again for your post! and add me to your list of who you saved 200 bucks!

Hi all!
I have bought faulty Mavica MVC-CD200. It has famous 13:01 error, I had this error each time I wanted to initialize blank CD. I was on the way of searching nearest repair shop but I found it was able to read CD I have made with Mavica borrowed from friend. So, I have also found it works quite normal with disks initialized in "good" mavica. I'm taking pictures on disks prepared in this way and I transfer them via USB to my computer. And I have found this:
http://www.mav-magazine.com/Oct2000/format_cdr.htm
And it works, I don't need to borrow working Mavica for initializing disks anymore while I can initialize and finalize disks on my computer. And it makes me more confused what this error code really means.

I can fix this error for users in canada that do not wish to send their camera to the states for repair or do not wish to attempt this repair themselves.
I am located in Ottawa and am an electronics technologist with all the necessary tools to do the job. I charge $60 for the service plus shipping.
I performed this fix on my sony and it works great now. thank you to the original poster of this fix.

- Re: Re: My Solution! Re: SONY Mavica C:13:01 ERROR (for MVC-CDxxx anon - 9th Oct 2004 4:25
Ribbon edge connectors are usually just pushed into the socket. Sometimes they have harder plastic tabs which help pushing them back in later. I usually try to pull evenly from both sides at once, or sometimes use needlenose pliars to get a light (but firm) grip of the entire ribbon and pull it straight away. Molex connectors (the white ones) are just like any plug, they usually don't have locking tabs for smaller connectors, but it's always a good idea to look carefully. a small screwdriver can be used to pry them out, but I usually just risk the danger and pull on the wires...

HELP!! Escher, Thank you. You're a God send! But I need just a little more help. I am having one little problem.
Okay. . . I removed all the screws (no problems, great instructions)Now I'm afraid to remove the ribbon. It doesn't appear to be proper place to pull or snap out. I have wire and ribbon in the finder. I'm desperate. I spent way too much much money for this camera to tear it up now.
I was pulling my hair out. Sony wanted to charge $198 plus tx to fix (no, to attempt to repair, no promises. If, if, if. . .) what appears to be a common problem with this CD1000. I'm a little angry about that. I have a Pentax 35mm that I purchased for 1/2 of what I paid for this and I've had it for 10 years and it still works like a dream and the picture are great. I love this Sony but I've had it for 2 years and now it won't even take pictures.
Please give my a little assistance.
- Re: Re: My Solution! Re: SONY Mavica C:13:01 ERROR (for MVC-CDxxx Escher - 9th Oct 2004 5:18
Hi, First thing.... Don't Panic!
just take everything slow and think about what you're doing
and it will be a snap.
The ribbon cables (flex cable) are basically cables with
exposed wire edge on one end.. They are basically pushed
snugly into a white (black?) connector that is soldered
onto the board. Basic removal is to grab the ribbon near
the connector and very gently pull it out (needle nose
can help get a constant force across the whole cable, but
you should take care not to rip the ribbon.)
here's a picture or two to show what the ends of that cable
look like:
http://www.aplusseller.com/pics/DellParts/Ribbon_Cable/CPiA/CPiA.JPG
(Far left is what the ribbon looks like when it's removed
from the socket)
In some circuits, the cable is 'locked' into the connector
by means of some tabs or something on the socket, but from
my memory, none of the cables in the Mavica are this way.
As for Molex: basically if there are two connectors (one
on the circuit board and one on the wire side), you just
gently pry these apart.. probably with a small screwdriver.
Most of the molex connections in the camera are used when
connecting independant wires (not a ribbon connector) to
the circuit board... although thinking back, there may be
one or two ribbon cables that have a connector on both
sides. This should be pretty easy to see, as there will be
two white (black? orange?) things.
Here's a picture of a typical molex:
http://www.robotroom.com/Tach2Connector.jpg
in this case, you don't want to remove the individaul wires,
but just unplug one connector from the other.
Let me know if you need more info, and perhaps i can find
some more detailed pictures!!
Good Luck

OH MY GOD!!!!!!! I found a guy who would fix it for 300$ but he wouldn't tell me what was wrong with it.. only that he knew what it was and could fix it. He said he used to work for sony and it was a special part that he could get from people who still worked there.... jackass.
Anyway... I got curious today and decided to do a little hunting... and I found your post... THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. It was relatively easy... and again I too reccommend diagrams.... simple ones.. especially with the screws.
This fix works and again I thank you.... ---Snincerely, Ben Goodwin

MC Escher; The email address on your posting no longer works, so
Thank you so much for the instructions for fixing the camera. It's a shame you have to completely disembowel it to get at this little piece of bad engineering. I should have noted precisely where it was so next time I could just drill a hole in the plastic and go in with a bent paper clip... We send things like this to Mars and wonder why they don't always work.
Now that I feel like a veteran neurosurgeon, I would like to contribute some comments. One would have had trouble prying your instructions from my cold dead hands when I was doing this, so important were they.
a) You probably noticed that you numbered the steps 1,2,3,4,3,4,5 ...
b) in the first step 3, I made the mistake of disconnecting the widest ribbon connector on the camera end, not the viewfinder end. Pull this connector directly up and it will come out of its socket. I futzed around, not knowing exactly how to pull them out, and when I finally did one the right way, it was the wrong end. This made it awkward and nearly impossible on the last step of reassembly.
c) Getting the brackets in the back door assembly in the right configuration was touchy, and there may be two of those four screws that would be best left in position, perhaps the two shorter ones. (If it's short, put it back in, and don't remove it unless you have to)
d) The connector for the ribbon cable mentioned in step 6 has two tiny plastic "keys" on either end which need to be pulled out. That releases it completely.
e) In step 7, the tabs for the rubber grommets need to be pulled away from their centers, not "the center". I fretted while trying to pull them away from the center of the camera.
f) The gear housing lid in step 8 is held on by 4 screws.
g) Their might be a reason to lubricate the rods the laser assembly moves on while it's apart.
Upon reassembly, the original problem (buzzing sounds and disk access) was fixed, however I was horrified to find it did not work right at first. It would not focus, and the viewfinder screen remained black, although the camera would record a blurry image. Then it gave an E:61:10 error. I removed the viewfinder assembly again and pushed at the connectors some more. It worked !!!
Economics of the experience:
a) It took me about three hours, but it would have taken substantial time to find a box, pack the camera, take it to the post office and do the paperwork. Not to mention the $200+
b) We know with confidence that the problem was not caused by using disks other than the official "mavica" disks, like I had worried.
but
c) There is the possibility of the little spring bracket bending out again with time, and so I will keep your instructions and the notes I made on them. If I knew the service center would REPLACE the defective part, it would almost be worth it to mail it out. The price of finding out would be for someone to take it apart, mark the little bracket, send it out, and then take it apart again after it came back. No thanks!
Again, thank you for this contribution. May many people find it.
- Mavica CD SONY C:13:01 ERROR Solution using Purchased Software
Joseph - 13th Jun 2004 19:27 I had this problem with a CD in my Sony Mavica CD400 camera. My desktop PC wouldn't even read the CD. I purchased CDRoller at www.cdroller.com. Their advice, which I used, suggested placing the CD into a PC with a CD read/write drive. My work computer does and it was able to read the CD where my home PC wasn't. CDRoller contains instructions specifically on repairing, among other things, CD Mavica CDs. You must read their Help carefully and follow the instructions. One thing I noticed is the Mavica creates "UDF" files. CDRoller essentially scans the CD and then identifies files which you can copy to your PC.
